Outdoor Kitchen Ideas for Australian Homes —
2025

Design inspiration grounded in Australia's climate, lifestyle, and available materials — design approaches that work in Sydney's Northern Beaches environment.

Australian outdoor living is distinct from European or American outdoor kitchen culture. We cook outdoors year-round, we have significant UV exposure, and coastal suburbs deal with salt air. The materials and layouts that work here are different from what you'll find on international inspiration sites.

Below are design approaches we've refined through real builds across Sydney's Northern Beaches — not conceptual renders.

Design Styles That Work in Australia

The Coastal Minimalist

Best for: Avalon, Palm Beach, Newport, Whale Beach

Brushed grey aluminium-framed doors (polytec Alfresco Brushed Grey), a pale grey Smartstone Sintered benchtop, and stainless steel appliances. Clean lines, no handles (push-to-open), and recessed LED strip lighting under the benchtop overhang. Works exceptionally well in beachside suburbs.

  • Handle-free push-to-open doors
  • Grey Sintered benchtop — Calacatta Bianco or Ash Grey
  • Recessed LED strip under overhang
  • Single run or L-shape layout

The Alfresco Entertainer

Best for: Manly, Dee Why, Collaroy, Narrabeen

An L-shape or U-shape kitchen designed around social flow. Bar overhang on one side with bar stools. BBQ on one run, sink and fridge on the return. Integrated pizza oven where space allows. Warm materials — Black Anodised doors with a dark Smartstone benchtop.

  • Bar overhang with seating for 3–4
  • BBQ + side burner on primary run
  • Sink, fridge, and storage on return
  • Black Anodised doors with warm stone

The Courtyard Kitchen

Best for: Townhouses and terraces across Northern Beaches

Designed for a tight courtyard or terrace. A single run up to 3.6m, maximising every centimetre. Pull-out bin, deep drawer units, and a compact under-bench fridge. Lighter coloured benchtop to reflect light and make the space feel larger.

  • 3–5 cabinet single run
  • Pull-out waste and recycling bins
  • Compact under-bench outdoor fridge
  • Light benchtop to open up the space

The Family BBQ Hub

Best for: Family homes across Northern Beaches suburbs

Practical and durable, designed for daily use and family cooking. Extra-deep drawers for utensils and BBQ tools. A large sink for cleaning produce and washing up. A full-size fridge, not an under-bench model. Easy-clean surfaces throughout.

  • Extra-deep drawer units
  • Large single-bowl stainless sink
  • Full-height outdoor fridge cabinet
  • Durable door finish in a neutral tone

5 Design Principles for Australian Outdoor Kitchens

1

Plan the work triangle first

Like an indoor kitchen, the most efficient outdoor kitchen has a clear triangle between the cooking surface, sink, and prep area. Ideally keep BBQ and sink within 1.5–2m of each other.

2

Face the cook into the party

If possible, orient the kitchen so the person cooking faces the outdoor dining area and guests, not a wall. This is a simple layout decision that transforms the entertaining experience.

3

Design for weather, not just sunshine

Think about rain, wind, and afternoon sun. A covered alfresco extends usability year-round. Position the BBQ away from prevailing wind direction.

4

Allow for power and water from the start

It's far cheaper to rough-in plumbing and electrical conduit before cabinets are installed than to retrofit them later. Plan these with your builder before committing to a layout.

5

Leave room to move

A working width of at least 900mm in front of cabinets is the minimum. 1200mm is comfortable when two people are in the kitchen simultaneously.
