How Much Does an Outdoor Kitchen Cost?

Key Technical Considerations
Six things most homeowners do not know until it is too late.
Structural Substrate
Not all outdoor kitchen cabinets are created equal. Standard MDF or particleboard will swell and delaminate within 1–2 seasons in coastal environments. Specify marine-grade ply or aluminium-framed cabinets as a minimum for Sydney's Northern Beaches climate.
Water & Gas Rough-In
Trades must be booked before cabinets are installed. The plumber needs to rough-in gas and water supply lines to the exact positions specified in your cabinet plan. Always have your final design locked in before booking trades to avoid costly re-works.
Benchtop Overhang
A 40–50mm overhang on the front edge gives a premium look and protects cabinet doors from drips. Bar-height sections (typically 1,050mm high) should have a 250–300mm overhang to accommodate bar stools comfortably.
BBQ Clearances
Built-in BBQs require manufacturer-specified clearances on all sides for heat dissipation and ventilation. Failure to follow these can void the warranty and create a fire hazard. Always request the BBQ's installation manual before finalising cabinet dimensions.
UV & Salt Exposure
Door finishes that look great in a showroom can fade, chalk or peel within 12 months if not rated for outdoor UV exposure. Ask specifically whether the door finish has an outdoor UV rating — not just a moisture rating. MJ Leckie uses UV-stable finishes as standard on all outdoor builds.
Power Points
A minimum of two double GPOs is recommended, positioned at benchtop height for appliances (blenders, coffee machines, etc.). If you plan a rangehood or outdoor fridge, confirm the electrical circuit load with your electrician before finalising placement.
The Complete Planning Checklist
Work through each step before committing to a builder. Tick off items as you go.
Step 1: Define Your Space
- Measure the available outdoor area (width x depth in mm)
- Identify the orientation — morning sun vs. afternoon shade
- Check proximity to the house for gas, water and electrical connections
- Confirm council/strata approval requirements for your suburb
- Assess the existing paving or deck structure for load-bearing capacity
- Note any overhead structures — pergola, roof, powerlines
Step 2: Choose Your Layout
- Decide on layout shape — straight run, L-shape, U-shape or island
- Allow a minimum 1,200mm work zone clearance in front of cabinets
- Position the BBQ away from prevailing winds and neighbour sightlines
- Plan for at least 900mm of benchtop prep space beside the BBQ
- Consider traffic flow between the kitchen and entertaining area
- Identify where guests will sit — bar stools at a raised bench?
Step 3: Select Your Appliances
- Choose BBQ type — built-in gas, freestanding or charcoal
- Decide on a bar fridge, beverage cooler or full-size underbench fridge
- Consider a sink with hot/cold water or cold-only connection
- Side burner or wok burner for extended cooking capability
- Pizza oven — built-in alcove or standalone nearby
- Rangehood if kitchen is under a covered alfresco roof
Step 4: Materials & Finishes
- Select cabinet material — marine-grade ply, aluminium frame or Stylex board
- Choose door style — alloy frame, Stylex panel or UV poly sprayed
- Pick a benchtop — porcelain, SmartStone, stainless or granite
- Confirm colour palette complements your home's exterior
- Select kicker/plinth colour and style
- Confirm all materials are rated for outdoor/UV/moisture exposure
Step 5: Services & Utilities
- Engage a licensed plumber for sink and gas rough-in
- Engage a licensed electrician for power points and lighting
- Confirm gas connection — natural gas or LPG bottle storage
- Plan outdoor power points — minimum 2 double GPOs recommended
- Consider LED strip lighting under benchtop overhangs
- Plan for drainage — especially if including a sink or ice maker
Step 6: Budget & Timeline
- Set a realistic budget range (cabinetry, benchtop, appliances, services)
- Request a detailed written quote — itemised by category
- Clarify what is included: supply only, or supply and install?
- Confirm lead time from deposit to installation date
- Allow 2–4 weeks for benchtop templating and fabrication after cabinets
- Factor in trades (plumber, electrician) scheduling around cabinet install
