Broil King BI 690 Built-In BBQ Review: Is It Worth It for Your Outdoor Kitchen?
The Broil King BI 690 is becoming one of the most popular built-in BBQs for luxury outdoor kitchens in Sydney. We break down exactly why — and what to consider before you install one.
Broil King BI 690 Built-In BBQ Review: Is It Worth It for Your Outdoor Kitchen?
The Broil King BI 690 consistently tops the shortlist when Sydney homeowners are specifying appliances for a high-end outdoor kitchen. It's not the cheapest built-in grill on the market — and it's not supposed to be. The BI 690 is engineered for people who take outdoor cooking seriously and want a grill that could still be performing flawlessly in 15 years if looked after.
Having installed dozens of Broil King BI 690s into outdoor kitchens across Sydney's Northern Beaches, here's our honest, experience-based assessment.

What We Love About the BI 690
1. Cooking Area That Actually Delivers
The 875cm² primary cooking surface isn't just a number — it's usable space. Five burners mean you can run different heat zones simultaneously: high sear on one side, gentle warm on the other. Feed 10 guests without the juggling act.
2. Cast Iron Grids Are Game-Changing
Serious cooks know the difference between cooking on cast iron versus pressed steel. The BI 690's dual-level cast iron grids heat evenly, retain temperature when cold food hits, and create a proper sear that seals in flavour. They also last indefinitely with basic maintenance.
3. The Flav-R-Wave System
This is Broil King's secret weapon. The stainless Flav-R-Wave sits between the burners and the grids, vaporising dripping fats and juices instantly rather than letting them flare up or char. The result is constant smoke flavour without flare-ups — exactly what you want from a premium grill.
4. Built to Survive the Coast
For Northern Beaches homeowners, this matters more than almost any other spec. The BI 690 uses genuine heavy-gauge stainless throughout — not the thin 430-grade stainless used in cheaper grills that starts pitting within 12-18 months near salt air. The BI 690 is built for longevity in coastal conditions.
5. Rotisserie Ready
The rear infrared rotisserie burner is a genuine bonus. A properly set-up rotisserie chicken on the BI 690 is genuinely one of the best things you'll ever cook outdoors. The motor and spit rod are included.
6. Warranty and Support
Broil King backs the BI 690 with a strong warranty and parts are genuinely available in Australia — something you can't say for all imported brands.
What to Consider Before Installing
Cutout Requirements
The BI 690 requires a 914mm wide cutout. This needs to be planned into your cabinet layout from the start. It also needs specific depth clearances and ventilation space below. This is not a job for a general handyman — get a specialist.
Non-Combustible Surround
Australian standards require the materials immediately surrounding a built-in BBQ to be non-combustible. At MJ Leckie Carpentry, all our cabinet panels adjacent to BBQ installations are specified and installed to meet these requirements.
Gas Connection
The BI 690 runs on LPG or natural gas (with appropriate regulator). A licensed gas fitter must connect and certify the installation. Plan the gas line routing into the cabinet design before installation begins — retrofitting is significantly more expensive.
Weight
The BI 690 is a heavy unit. The supporting cabinet structure needs to be engineered to carry it. This is standard practice in our builds but worth confirming with any builder you're considering.
How It Fits Into a Complete Outdoor Kitchen
The BI 690 is most commonly specified alongside:
- •An outdoor refrigerator positioned within arm's reach for cold drinks and ingredients
- •A prep sink on the opposite side of the BBQ for cleaning and prep
- •A side burner or wok burner for sauces, sides, and Asian-style cooking
- •Generous benchtop space on both sides of the grill for landing hot plates and plating food
We typically position the BI 690 as the focal point of the kitchen — centre of the run or at the corner of an L-shape — so the cook faces guests while cooking. It's a social design choice that transforms the cooking experience.
Is the Broil King BI 690 Worth the Investment?
Yes — unequivocally, for the right buyer.
If you're building a quality outdoor kitchen that you want to use and love, the BI 690 is the grill to build around. The cooking performance is exceptional, the build quality is genuine, and the long-term value is outstanding.
If you're building on a tight budget and the grill is just one cost among many, there are more affordable starting points. But if the cooking experience matters to you, don't compromise on the centrepiece.
